Immigrants
Aside from excellent living conditions, Canada has one of the best healthcare systems across the globe. Most
medical services are given for free to permanent residents registered with a provincial health insurance plan.
This is not the case for new immigrants. They have a specific waiting period before they are eligible for a
government health plan. It is highly recommended that while you are waiting for the time period to pass that you
purchase temporary travel health insurance to avoid out-of-pocket expenses.
Think of this for a moment; if you are a new immigrant and you or one of your family
members becomes ill for whatever reason during the waiting period, the medical costs during this time could be
overwhelming. There would be charges for the ambulance if necessary, the x-rays if needed and all required
medicines. You would also have to pay for any surgery or hospital stays. This can amount to many thousands of
dollars.
With travel health insurance, these medical expenses would most certainly be covered. This would not only
provide an easier waiting period, but more importantly, it would provide you with peace of mind. Medical bills are
no laughing matter and travel health insurance should be considered with the same attention as is car
insurance.
