Travelling to Newfoundland
Newfoundland and Labrador are the separate geographical areas that make up the one political entity known as
Newfoundland. Residents, however, strongly distinguish between the mainland of Labrador and the island of
Newfoundland. It is on this island that the majority of the population lives, and it is here that tourists will
find the most attractions. The lively culture of this province, whose subsistence is based on fishing, is sure to
charm those travelling to Newfoundland.
When to Go Newfoundland is cool all year, and the province receives a great deal
of rain. The coasts are often foggy and windy. The summers are short, but July and August can be warm and are
the best time to visit.
Where to Go
Major Attractions: St. John’s, Notre Dame Bay and Twillingate Island, Gros Morne National
Park, Trinity Bay
St. John’s, Britain’s first overseas colony and the oldest city in North America, is the capital of
Newfoundland. The city, which feels more like a town, is comprised of winding streets, stairs and alleys that rise
up from the waterfront. Many sites and attractions are worth visiting in this charming city. These include:
Signal Hill National Historical Park – The
view from this Park is a must-see, as is the Cabot Tower at the top. Built in 1900, this site received the
first-ever transatlantic message. The walking trail from the Tower to the Battery section of town is enjoyable.
Museums – Newfoundland Museum displays relics of the extinct
native tribe once living in St. John’s, as well as presenting a history of the city. The Newfoundland Science
Centre and James O’Mara Pharmacy Museum are also worth visiting.
CA Pippy Park – The Fluvarium, a glass sided cross-section of a living
river on display in this park, is fascinating.
Notre Dame Bay is the highlight of central Newfoundland. Eighty villages dot the shore of the Bay, while
offshore a cluster of islands provides many ideal spots for viewing whales and icebergs. Descending from Greenland
glaciers in May and June of each year, over three hundred icebergs make their way to the Bay. Only one eighth of
the thirty metre high icebergs can be seen above the water.
Within Notre Dame Bay, Twillingate Island is the most stunningly beautiful visiting spot. From the
century-old Long Point Lighthouse, dramatic views and icebergs can be seen.
Gros Morne National Park offers magnificent and
varied geography as well as fjords. The beaches, mountain hiking and cross-country skiing trails delight visitors.
Caribou, moose, seals and the occasional whale can be seen in the park. The volcanic coast is home to sea caves and
is known as ‘Green Gardens’.
