Travelling to Prince Edward Island
P.E.I. is a breathtaking maritime province offering peaceful, pastoral and quiet beauty. There is a slow
pace of life on the Island, and travelling to P.E.I. is ideal for a lazy and calm holiday.
When to Go As in all Maritime Provinces, many of the attractions of P.E.I. are
closed in the winter. The visiting season is short, comprising only the summer months. July and August are the
driest months of the summer season and are therefore recommended for travelling to Prince Edward Island.
Where to Go
Major Attractions: Charlottetown, P.E.I National Park.
Charlottetown, the provincial capital offers interesting sites all within walking distance. The historic
houses and grand churches of the area are best seen through the readily available organized site-seeing tours
offered in the city. The Confederation Centre for the Arts contains a museum, art gallery, library and theatre and
is a notable building due to its controversial architectural style.
P.E.I. National Park, located North of
Charlottetown attracts the largest number of tourists to the province. One of the country’s smallest National
Parks, it offers the best sandy beaches; the spectacular sand dunes and provincially characteristic red sandstone
cliffs give way to warmest swimming waters of the province. While all the park’s beaches are good, Cavendish Beach is the most popular swimming area. Cavendish is
the busiest summer beach spot, but it is still never overly crowded.
The popularity of P.E.I. National Park is due in large part to the House of Green Gables, which can be found in this area. This
property is the setting of the 1908 novel ‘Anne of Green Gables’, written by L.M. Montgomery. The orphan
heroine of this charming story has captured the hearts and minds of individuals around the world; her home is
the most popular attraction of the province. Anne paraphernalia can be found throughout the P.E.I., and a
number of sites related to the novel can be seen in the park. These include L.M. Montgomery’s home, the
cemetery where the author is buried and a museum holding original manuscripts. The Green Gables Golf Course is accessible for lovers of the sport and
numerous quiet wood trails are available for meandering.
Other Highlights when Travelling to Prince Edward Island Include:
- Orby Head, that offers trails leading along red cliffs and breathtaking seaside views.
- Brakley Beach, a popular spot with the locals.
- Victoria, a picturesque fishing village which has become a centre for artists and is filled with studios
and galleries.
